Course Description:
It is important for both physical and occupational therapists to take an active role in the management of tissue and limb swelling. In this introductory course, therapists will learn methods to manage edema as a result of trauma, surgery, disease processes, and venous insufficiency. Diagnosis and symptoms commonly associated with swelling will be addressed, including warning signs that may warrant medical testing or consultation prior to treatment. Participants will gain an increased understanding of watersheds and drainage patterns for the lymphatic system. Indications and contraindications for bandaging and compression garments will be covered. Bandaging principles will be taught with a demonstration of proper bandaging and measurement techniques for venous edema. Samples of upper and lower extremity compression garments and a list of resources will be available. Patient education, self care, and staff training will be discussed as an important aspect of treatment.
