Developing a Functional Exercise Program for Elderly

Course Description This course will provide an overview of geriatric exercise principles. Exercises for common syndromes will be explored including those that work toward restoring vitality, strength, and balance in the elderly client. The therapeutic rationale for the effectiveness of exercise by progressively challenging the neuromuscular system will be explored (i.e. proprioception and motor response). Participants will receive information that not only can be used in skilled treatment planning but also as as a component of program development within restorative or community based settings in both individual and group settings.
Learning Objectives
- Identify components of best quality documentation
- Understand the impact proper versus improper documentation has on communication with other staff, clinical issues and reimbursement
- Realize the impact of denials has on practice
- Identify ethical and legal issues regarding document
- Understand age related physical changes that are unrelated to disease processes
- Select evaluation and screening tools for use in an exercise program
- Understand conditions and complexities that need to be considered when designing an exercise program including limitations and precautions
- Identify specific exercise programs and activities that could be incorporated within a geriatric exercise program
- Increase awareness of evidence based exercise programs
- Discuss reimbursement and marketing considerations for exercise programmingation
