Course Description

-  This course meets the Illinois Regulations stating: All individuals working in a designated unit for People with Dementia require 4 hours of Special Training:

On January 1, 2005 new regulations went into effect for facilities that offer  a special care unit for individuals with Dementia. This rule includes therapist’s who treat residents from those units, including temporary placement or contract therapists. The act includes assisted living facilities as well as SNFs.    Facilities need to demonstrate that therapists working on those units have had at least 4 hours of Dementia specific training yearly. This course will examine a new approach in treatment for people with Dementia by exploring the opportunities which therapists have in directly impacting their treatment and instruction of caregivers and staff as a part of  the therapist’s daily treatment and goals. Ensuring carryover of best practice techniques allows for maximum independent functioning of the person with Dementia.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation the participants will:

• Describe the philosophy of Ability Centered Care.
• Select appropriate ADL, IADL , mobility, transfer and compensatory/ facilitative/ safety techniques for therapist and caregivers to use specific to this population.
• Demonstrate knowledge and ability to instruct caregivers in identifying challenging behavior antecedents and use of therapeutic techniques to modify behaviors.
• Have materials and information needed to train staff of dementia units, general facility staff and other therapists who may see clients on a dementia unit.
